Benign Skin Conditions

About the Condition

The description of a tumour as ‘benign’ indicates that although it may grow in size, it is not technically cancerous and will not spread to other parts of the body. While this is generally a relief, it’s important to note that the tumour can still cause damage to organs, tissue and nerves if it grows in size. Because of this, it is important that patients are monitored closely and treated appropriately.

Following the correct procedure usually ensures that the overall prognosis for benign conditions is very good, and treatment is generally successful.

Symptoms

Benign skin conditions can present in a variety of ways, and the signs are often different for different people. However, the most common symptoms are:

  • A lump on the skin
  • Swelling
  • Pain in a certain area of the skin
  • Inflammation

If any of these symptoms apply to you or if you have any concerns about similar symptoms, see your doctor. Alternatively you can book an appointment with one of our specialists by completing this form online or by calling 020 8247 3351.

Diagnosis

If you are referred to CCL for diagnostic tests regarding a suspected skin condition, a thorough examination will be undertaken to discover if it is benign or malignant. This may involve:

  • A physical examination of the lump/lesion and surrounding area
  • A blood test, to check for any abnormalities
  • A biopsy, where cell samples are taken for examination for signs of cancer.
